While Abstract Expressionism is often associated with male artists, women played a crucial and influential role in the movement. Artists such as Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, and Elaine de Kooning made significant contributions, despite facing considerable gender bias. Lee Krasner, for instance, was instrumental in developing the movement alongside her husband, Jackson Pollock, while maintaining her distinct artistic voice. Helen Frankenthaler pioneered the “soak-stain” technique, which influenced the Color Field Painting movement. Joan Mitchell’s vigorous brushwork and vibrant compositions earned her recognition as a leading figure in the second generation of Abstract Expressionists.
